The Information Society Services and e-commerce are evolving rapidly and are the most significant drivers of innovation of the economic growth, in recent decades. Moreover, electronic commerce and onlines services have precipitated an evolution in the legal framework for doing business online. This framework consists of the E-Commerce Directive and many other pieces of subsequent EU legislation.

The potential of Ecommerce (Online Services) is a new challenge and an opportunity for SMEs in Cyprus to extend their activities beyond their regional and national boundaries, but it also increases challenges and competitive pressure. The use of internet and e-commerce, offer a wide range of services and many facilities that can help enterprises to provide an efficient and effective tool for improving their productivity, product performance and accessibility, continuous service improvement and cost reduction.

In the framework of e-commerce promotion in Cyprus, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry has launched the Programme “Epixirite Diadiktiaka” ("Business Online") as part of its strategic plan for promoting the growth of e-commerce in Cyprus.
